$20,000 to improve their caramel and cheese production facility
On Wednesday, July 15th, Working Lands Enterprise Initiative Staff and Board Members traveled to Townshend, VT, to visit Lucas Farrell and Louisa Conrad of Big Picture Farm, recipients of a $20,000 Enterprise Investment Grant in fiscal year 2014. Over the past year, Farrell and Conrad have utilized the grant funds to expand both their caramel and cheese-making facilities, and purchased a walk-in freezer for short and longer-term storage of inventory.
Founded by Farrell and Conrad in 2010, Big Picture Farm is a farmstead confectionery and creamery offering award winning goat milk caramels and farmstead cheeses made with fresh, raw, goat’s milk from their herd of 46 healthy and happy, free-range companions. Each caramel or cheese produced by Big Picture Farm comes from a specific place, and is made from the milk of a specific animal, eating specific flowers, leaves, and plants during a specific time of year. The Working Lands Enterprise Investment Grant has allowed Big Picture Farm to increase production, lower production costs, and increase product quality.
Despite their busy schedules, Lucas and Louisa were gracious hosts, sending WLEI staff and board members away with a thorough understanding of their business and handfuls of delicious caramels. Immediately following the tour, Lucas and Louisa hopped in the car to attend a press event in New York City celebrating their recent wins at the Specialty Food Association’s SOFI Awards - the association’s most prestigious honor.
